The Ultimate Hipster

Living in a world where everyone wants to be original.ย

Hipsters. Typically, that word is thrown around at a guy when he’s wearing tight pants, a v-neck, a beanie, and has the perfect, manscaped beard. For a girl, it’s typically someone who heatedly argues that she was in love with her fandom before it was popular. (Guilty)

Being labeled as a hipster involves being independent-minded. Unique. They strive to be a trendsetter- not a trend follower. They’re cool before others can even process that that’s what they are.

When I was in high school, I was introduced to LOST, and I was instantly hooked. For years, I made it a point to rewatch the show over and over. (About once or twice a year, because I have so many episodes of so many things to see.)

So, of course, I recommended it to everyone I knew. And they’d be like, “Eh, okay. I’ve heard of that. Maybe. Whatever, Ciara.” But NO ONE listened to me. NO ONE.

Right before I left for college, I heard that familiar “bum bum bum bum bum bum bum.. bum bum” tune that always stirs up the feels. (๐Ÿ˜ญif you know what I mean). I go out to the living room, and lo and behold my mother is watching Lost. My mother. (Btw, hi mom!)

And then when I’m at college, she says that she caught a guy at our church singing “You All Everybody!”. Soon, everyone I knew was getting on the Lost bandwagon. (Thanks guys. For not listening to me sooner!!!! ๐Ÿ˜)

And then not to long ago, my husband and best friend started watching it. Oh, and what do they think? Do they hate it? Nope! They’re all hooked. Ugh.

Now, everywhere I go, it’s LOST this and LOST that. This is why being a hipster, bringing that thing you like and making it cool, is so funny. Because eventually, everyone will like it. And then it won’t be this original thing that set you apart. You’ll just be like everyone else. One in the crowd.

So, what is the ultimate hipster then? Well, the answer might shock you: it’s being a Christian.

Now you’re probably wondering what I’m smoking here. (the answer: ribs) Being a Christian isn’t really the hippest thing right now. What with all of the hate and controversy over unpopular opinions…

But you see. That’s kinda the point.

The Bible says in Romans 12:2, not to conform to the world. Doesn’t that sound like just the sort of thing a hipster would say? Don’t conform to the social norms, to mainstream, to what everyone tells you is okay, because it’s not.

Now, the Bible also says this:

“If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.” -John 15:19

In other non-tongue twistery words, if you’re a Christian then you’re not a part of the world and it’s standards. And because of that, the world will hate you.

But not for long.

Because eventually, there will come a day when the world will see that the trends you set- the beliefs you have in Christ and leading a godly life by following His example- were the right way to live all along. The “cool” way in God’s eyes. And they won’t be hating you then. They’ll be wishing they had listened, that they had hopped onto the bandwagon much sooner.

So if you’re a Christian- you’re cool. The world says you’re not. Some days it might feel like you’re not. But you so totally are. You’re the ultimate hipster for loving and believing in Jesus. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ‘

Anywho, that’sย all for today. ย (Are you happy that I didn’t write about gore and violence, mom? ๐Ÿ˜
